Necessity is the mother of invention or so the saying goes.
Being a father of a young baby and also the owner of a small business - I find myself lacking the time to read. When I do find time, I'm often tired from a day wrangling baby and business concerns and do not have the energy to tackle a long novel.
I know many of my readers can identify with this phenomenon. Between family and jobs and the many other concerns in our lives, reading for pleasure can take a back seat. I struggle to carve out time and feel guilty when I can't finish a longer novel due to exhaustion.
Instead of beating my head against the wall trying to find time to read longer novels - and listening to readers with the same concerns - I sought to find a solution.
Focusing on stories, novellas, and other works - the Short Reads from Moran Press were born. What are the short reads, you ask? In a sentence:
The Short Reads are works meant to be read in a sitting.
I sought to create a line of books aimed at people with busy schedules and hectic lives - people that wish to read, but are daunted by the sight of a 600 page novel.
To date there are four Short Reads published at Moran Press, with many more to follow. All can be read in the space of an afternoon or evening. If you share my love of reading and struggle to find time for fiction - check out the books available at Moran Press. Have an adventure in a day.
BREAKING NEWS: The NJPoet, Charles Bivona, will join Moran Press. His role at the company is top secret, the details having been lost in Hillary Clinton's deleted e-mails. What you can expect is for Charles to bring fire and passion to Moran Press and most likely books as well.
For those of you not familiar with Charles Bivona - I will let him tell the story through his prose and poetry. His first book to be released from Moran Press, NJPoet 2.0, will be an eye-opener for readers and truly unlike anything else on your reading list.
Part poetry, part personal essay, Charles Bivona will take you on a journey through his life in NJPoet 2.0. In the coming days and weeks, I'll provide updates on this soon to be released book. Perhaps I'll post a sample or two.
In addition to poetry and prose, Charles will bring his considerable talents on social media to Moran Press - indeed, he will be taking over primary tweeting responsibilities at @moranpress
For those of you not on twitter - I suggest joining today and follow Charles at @CharlesBivona
I hope all my readers join me in welcoming Charles to Moran Press and be on the look out for news of NJPoet 2.0
GOODREADS REVIEW OF THE TERRORIST OF PROVIDENCE STREET BY ROGER DEBLANCK
With a brilliant set of interconnected stories, Moran has produced a spellbinding tale in The Terrorist of Providence Street. The novella’s antihero, Scott Holden, aspires to write and have his books published.
He works at a restaurant, but he suffers from social awkwardness, especially in expressing his feelings for a female colleague. His anxiety leaves him fantasizing about her.
When a new employee, a “monkey” named Karl Marx, starts at the restaurant, Scott feels jealous and threatened by Karl’s banter and impropriety with the ladies and also by Karl’s great fortune with having his own novel published.
Scott’s world becomes more bizarre when he encounters illusions at the restaurant, where he supposedly still works, but finds himself full of memory lapse and confusion. His hallucinations and delusions continue as he falls deeper into lonesomeness.
Even as a writer, his past haunts him, which he brings to life with shocking consequences. In putting together this psychological thriller, Moran blurs the surreal world with reality and builds a plot of suspense that is revelatory and downright chilling in its finale.
This is the type of book that will have you wanting to consider and examine its every detail.
